Guten Tag! Formnext in Frankfurt, Germany, is well under way.
Oureditors, Peter Zelinski and Stephanie Hendrixson are on-site covering this exciting event, seeing the new applications, discoveries and possibilities an additive future holds.
While exploring the innovative show floor on Tuesday, two different concepts stood out.
1.
3D printing for textiles. 3D printing elastomers onto textiles is not only possible, it's practical, too. Stephanie explains in this video how reactive extrusion additive manufacturing could impact the textile industry.
2.
Control over the focal size of a laser. With a new software solution to control the focal size of the laser in directed energy deposition, manufacturers can build quickly with large spot sizes, but at the same time have the ability to build fine details with smaller spot sizes. See it in Pete’s video.

CPC offers a wide portfolio of solutions with standard connector products that are trusted by the world's leading Additive Manufacturing OEMs. Our connectors are designed to support safe, intelligent and efficient material handling.
The 300-kilogram pressure vessel pictured in point 10 of Pete’s Formnext 2022 recap is making another appearance at Formnext 2023 — but this time with validation.
LUT University carried out destructive testing on the part. It showed signs of breakage at a pressure of 111 bar. Read more here.
Robots for metal AM postprocessing and finishing solutions. Rivelin Robotics’ NetShape Robots and control software utilize both machine learning and traditional deterministic control theory to optimize the quality and repeatability of support removal and finishing.
2.
Fully neutralized system addresses EBM charging issues. Wayland Additive’s Calibur3 system was developed to overcome common challenges with metal AM and deliver on all of the advantages of metal electron beam powder bed fusion (PBF) technology.
3.
Desktop vapor smoothing for finished parts. AMT’s PostPro SFX is a compact desktop chemical vapor smoothing machine for postprocessing. It is designed to work with a variety of 3D printers and platforms, and is compatible with all nylons.
Functional coating processes for microstructures. Horizon Microtechnologies’ coating processes for microstructures enhance the functionality for parts produced via micro 3D printing. The coatings are nonmetallic conductive, environmentally-resistant and metallic for the benefit of polymer micro-AM parts.
6.
Automated density determination for AM parts. Dimensionics Density’s technology enables manufacturers to reliably test the density of freeform parts and highly complex AM parts, and can measure density repeatably to 0.001 g/cm3.
7.
Postprocessing systems for increased productivity and reduced cost. AM Solutions’ compact M4 system offers surface grinding, smoothing and even polishing of small to midsize metal and plastic parts. The processing unit and process water cleaning and recycling are combined in one system.
8.
3D printing filtration and atmosphere management technology. BOFA offers a range of 3D printing filtration and atmosphere management technology, including the enhanced-capacity 3D PrintPro 4 unit. It is designed for large-format capability for fused filament fabrication, stereolithography, digital light processing and material jetting processes.
